HLN will create New Social Media-Heavy Programming
Who’s ready for some social media-focused game shows?
Following an announcement last week that it was rebranding to become the “first TV network for the social media generation,” HLN previewed several new projects to Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. A brief scan of
the show names—Videocracy, Keywords, I Can Haz NewsToons, #What’sYourFomo (the last is an app)—shows the network has indeed done its social media nomenclature homework.
Videocracy will be a daily rundown of the day’s buzziest online stories, I Can Haz NewsToons is a half-hour collection of satire animation, while Keywords is a game show in which contestants try to guess the subject from
its keywords (“reality star” + “sex tape” = Kim Kardashian).
One.Click.Away, however—which will “reveal the stories behind bizarre, funny and esoteric online classifieds”—may have missed the buzzboat. An HLN executive described the inspiration behind the show as the ad,
“Wedding dress, never used, for sale.” That’s not a real ad but a variant of the much-darker shortest-story-ever, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn,” commonly misattributed to Ernest Hemingway. It actually predates
both Hemingway and the internet.
